Nicodemus J. Bender, 81, of Billings, formerly of Laurel, died Nov. 6, 2008, at the VA Medical Center in Denver.
Nick was born April 17, 1927, in St. Anthony, N.D., to Nicodemus and Matilda (Geiss) Bender.
He is survived by one sister, Othilia "Ot" Smith of Phoenix; and his longtime companion, Esther Haas of Billings; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Mary Knoll, Joe Bender, Adam Bender and Della DeBord.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Mountview Cemetery. Michelotti-Sawyers was in charge of arrangements and condolences may be left for the family at www.michelottisawyers.com.

Joseph Bender
Joseph Nicodemus Bender, 89, Mandan, died Sept. 19, 2007, at Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Monday, Sept. 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Interment will follow services in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m., a Parish Vigil at 7 p.m. and a St. Anthony Verein Rosary at 7:30 p.m. There will be no visitation at the church Monday.
Joe was born April 11, 1918, in St. Anthony, the son of Nicodemus and Mathilda (Geiss) Bender. He was raised and educated in St. Anthony. On Nov. 14, 1938, he married Pauline Lanz in St. Anthony. They moved to Mandan in 1948.
Joe was a bartender for the Knights of Columbus Club for several years before becoming a maintenance foreman at L & H Manufacturing, where he worked for 28 years before retiring in 1983.
Joe was always known for caring for others. In his younger days he enjoyed baseball, bowling and golf. In 1981 he carded the first hole-in-one of the year on the Mandan Golf Course, holing his tee shot on No. 8, using a 7-wood for the 180-yard ace. He also spent time in his vegetable garden, loved spending time with his family and having a cup of coffee with friends.
Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, and was a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus.
Joe was dearly loved and will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Roger (Ruth), San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Marilyn Hanna, Nicholasville, Ky.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Debra) Bender, Sandra (Kevin) Anderson, Stephanie Bender and John (Megan) Hanna; four great-grandchildren, Megan, Clare and Ian Bender and Jacqueline Hanna; one sister, Otilia Smith, Phoenix; one brother, Nick Bender, Laurel, Mont.; and numerous other relatives.
Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, in 1975; his parents; one brother, Adam; and two sisters, Mary Knoll and Isabel Debord.
The family wishes to thank Medcenter One Care Centers in Mandan, Bismarck and Underwood for their care and support.
