Funeral services for Harris Vernon Bohnhoff, 84, formerly of Bucyrus, ND will be Friday, April 7, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hettinger Lutheran Church. Rev. Kathleen Dettmann will officiate and interment will be in the Wolf Butte Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wolf Butte Township, Adams County, ND.
Harris was born Dec 29, 1921. to Louis C. and Louisa (Yackey) Bohnhoff on the farm south of New England in Strehlow Township, Hettinger County. He had 5 siblings, Dorothy, Violet, LaVerne, Lola, and Donald. Harris graduated from New England High School in 1940 and went on to earn a certificate from National Farm Youth Foundation in Farm Engineering and Management. He joined the United States Air Corp in 1941, serving as an airplane mechanic. Harris was honorably discharged in 1945.
On July 12th, 1942, Harris married Lola Mae Swenson in Seattle, Washington. To this union were born four children, Russel Elroy, Florence Marie, Arlene Ann, and Sandra Lee. In 1946 Harris and Lola bought their farm north of Bucyrus in Wolf Butte Township, Adams County. Harris was an active member of the Wolf Butte Lutheran Church, Farmers Union, Community Club, and 4-H. He was also supportive and active in other community events. The life, Lola and Harris shared, ended on Jan 24, 1961 with her death.
Harris continued to farm until shortly before he married Opal Samdahl Hanna on July 19, 1964 in Hettinger, ND. Opal had three sons, James, Lynn, and Dale. At that time Harris and Opal, and family moved to Denver, CO. In Denver, Harris worked for Denver Public Schools, Liquid Coffee Company, Flintco Lumber, and Poulte Homes. After his retirement, he worked part time for Messiah Lutheran Church where he and Opal were members and had many friends.
Opal and Harris moved to Spearfish in 1993. They were active members of Sons of Norway and the Spearfish Lutheran Church. Opal passed away Dec.19, 2002 after 39 years of marriage. Harris Bohnhoff died at age 84 on April 02, 2006 in Spearfish, SD.
Harris is survived by his daughters, Florence (Del) Schafer, Arlene (Bill) Slaichert, Sandra Keiter and daughter in law Mary (Russel) Bohnhoff, step sons, James (Carol) Hanna, Lynn Hanna, Dale Hanna, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Donald (Margaret Ann) Bohnhoff. Others left to mourn, are sisters in law Margie Bohnhoff, Viola Yohe and Joyce Peterson, brother in law Gerald (Peggy) Swenson, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
In addition to Lola and Opal, Harris was preceded in death by his parents, Louis C. and Louisa Bohnhoff, his brother LaVerne, sisters Dorothy, Violet, and Lola, his son Russel, and grandson Thomas Richard Bohnhoff.
