Walter, 96, of Colchester, Illinois, formerly Manchester, Michigan, passed away on Monday at the Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born in Freedom Township, MI, the son of John George and Charlotte (Jedele) Hinderer and spent most of his life in Washtenaw County.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ (Rogers Corner), Chelsea, MI and was in charge of Mount Hope Cemetery, Freedom Township from 1970 to 2001.
He was married on March 6, 1955 to Lucile Lorena Layher at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Saline, MI. She preceded him in death on July 28, 2012 after 57 years of marriage.
He graduated from Chelsea High School in 1934 and went to Cleary College to take up accounting. In 1936 he went to work for Fred Wiedman's Ford dealership in Saline.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army on August 7, 1941, receiving basic training at Camp Grant, IL. He was then transferred to Fort Monmouth, NJ for technical communications training. In February 1942 he was shipped with the first contingent of troops to the European Theater and landed in Ireland. From there he went to London by train and remained there until September 1945. After coming home from the Army, he continued working in accounting and office management.
Later he was part-owner of car dealerships in Saline, MI, Milan, MI, and Napoleon, OH. In 1982, he became part-owner of Napoleon Lawn & Leisure, retiring in 1997.
Survivors include two sons, John W. (Lori) Hinderer of Jackson, MI and George W. (Kay) Hinderer of Colchester, IL; grandson, Bradley J. Hinderer of Toledo, OH; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elsie; brothers: Clarence, Herbert, and Erwin; and sisters-in-laws, Gwyneth Hinderer, Magdelina Hinderer, and Lorena Hinderer.
A Funeral Service was held on Monday, August 20, 2012 at St. John's United Church of Christ, Chelsea with Pastor Lynn Finkbeiner officiating.
