Anthony Burkhart came to America in 1851 (date conflicts with marriage data given by Wright, who says they were married in 1854 in France.) In 1880, farmer Andrew Burkhart (50) lived in Seneca Twp., Monroe Co., OH with his wife Hannah (44) and children Peter (21), Andrew C. (19), Elias (15), Simon (14), Catherine (13), Joseph (11), Filomena (10), Nicolas (9), Jacob (7), George (5), and Adam (2). Elias, Simon, Catherine and Joseph attended school. In 1900, Andy (69) and Hannah (64) Burkhart lived in Seneca Twp. with sons Joseph (32) and Adam (22). Although the census indicates that Andy and Hannah were born in Bavaria and France, respectively, the columns that should show immigra-tion information are blank. Adjacent farms in the census were those of John Nauer and Woodrow Okey. In 1910, 79 year old Anton Burkhart owned a farm in Seneca Twp. where he lived with his wife Hannah (74) and their unmarried sons Joseph (42) and Adam (25). The year of Anton's immigration to America is not legible. It might be 1852. He was a naturalized citizen. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Anton's son Nicolaus and his wife's nephew, Peter Kuhn. Obituary (from Betty Hartley)Another useful and highly respected citizen of Monroe County, in the person of Anthony Burkhart, died at his home near Burkhart Station on Wednesday, June 16, aged 90 years and 4 months to the day. Born of a good family in Rhenish, Bavaria, Germany, on the 16 day of February 1830, he came to America in 1851, when 21 years of age, adopted Summit township, Monroe County, Ohio, as his home, where he spent the remainder of his days as a citizen ever faithful to his family, his church and the best interests of the community in which he lived.Three years after landing in this country he was married to Miss Hannah Kuhn, daughter of Peter Kuhn, on September 25, 1854. To this happy union, fourteen children were born, all of whom became citizens of sterling character; one son, Peter, who diedabout twelve years ago. He leaves to mourn his death an aged wife and ever faithful companion, four daughters and nine sons, as follows: John Burkhart of Temperanceville, Ohio; Mrs. Mary A. Weisend, Mrs. Barbara T. Weisend, Jacob J. and Nicholas Burk-hart, of Kuhn, OHio; Mrs. John Haren of Ozark, Ohio; Simon Burkhart and Mrs. Jacob Burkhart, Miltonsburg, Ohio; Anton P. and George A. Burkhart of Marr, Ohio; Adam J., Joseph W. and Aloysius Burkhart at home with their mother. In addition to this unusually large family of children. 67 grandchildren were born to Mr. and Mrs. Burkhart, 14 of whom have died leaving 53 still living; also 55 great grandchildren, 45 of whom are still living, 10 have died early in life.Anthony Burkhart was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church, a loving husband, faithful father and highly respected citizen who will be sadly missed by the many who know and honored him.Well attended funeral services were conducted at St. Joseph's R.C. Church by Rev. Father Igle on Friday, June 18. Interment in Chapel Hill Cemetery.Faithful husband, father and citizen, rest in peace.
