Description: Please disregard my previous suggestion, the place was in error.
After looking at FindAGrave for his burial place, I discovered that,
Radioman 3rd Class (RM3) Dale Edward Schantz died when the USS Houston sank during the Battle of Sunda Strait, during WWII.
So, the correct information should be;
Died: onboard USS Houston CA-30, Sunda Strait, Netherlands East Indies
The full story of the sinking was not learned until the survivors were released from Japanese internment, at the end of the war.
Of the original crew of 1,168 onboard USS Houston, 368 crew members made it to shore and were captured by the Japanese, 77 died in captivity. 291 survived to the end of the war. RM3 Schantz was one of the 800 who went down with the ship and no remains were recovered. There is a website that gives a list of crew delineating who went down with the ship, who died in captivity and who survived to the end of the war. That website is here; www.usshouston.org
