  [S927] Obituary. uly 25, 2004 12:00 am ? The Bismarck Tribune (0) Signatures Michael J. Schmalz, 53, Mandan, died July 22, 2004, in a Fargo medical center, after three years of battling cancer. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 26, at Bismarck Funeral Home with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be at noon in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place. Michael Joseph Schmalz was born May 10, 1951, in Dickinson, the son of Michael and Hattie (Kostelecky) Schmalz. He was reared and educated in Killdeer, then he served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an accomplished musician and artist. Michael is survived by his mother, Hattie Schmalz, Mandan; four brothers, Raphael (Christine), Bismarck, Anthony (Patty), Mandan, Robert (Brenda), Mandan, and Steven, Bismarck; three sisters, Laura Brown and her friend, David Benevey, Bridgewater, N.J., Mary Sturn, Apple Valley, Minn., and Carmae (Mike) Schmidt, Mandan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Michael in death were his father, Michael; and both sets of grandparents, George and Magdalena Schmalz and Joseph and Beatrice Kostelecky.
