Roman L. Brooks
BROOKS, Roman L., 87, of 204 Center Street, Woodsfield, Ohio, died at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2005 in the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, West Virginia.
He was born in Woodsfield, Ohio on May 20, 1918, the son of the late Leo and Katherine Weisend Brooks.
He was a 1936 graduate of Woodsfield High School, Woodsfield, where he was val- edictorian of his class. After graduation he attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland from 1936-1940. He proudly served his country during W.W.II. as officer of the deck on the U.S.S. West Virginia saving many lives the day Pearl Harbor was bombed.
He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1943-1945 and had received two Masters Degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He was a retired Commander in the U.S. Navy; and a retired inspector from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in Washington, D.C. He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Ohio. He enjoyed watching football and playing tennis in his spare time.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie Bott, Edna Brooks and Helen Rohr; and three brothers, Paul, Frank and Joe Brooks.
Surviving are six nieces, Helen (John) McGinnis of Laurens, South Carolina, JoAnn (Dwight) Brannon of Woodsfield, Becky (Carey) Bott of Woodsfield, Monica (Bill) Long of Woodsfield, Lynn Rohr of Loveland, Ohio and Samantha (Andy) Moore of Alexandria, Ohio; two nephews, Mark Rohr of Joplin, Missouri and Charlie (Kay) Brooks of Woodsfield; several great-nieces and nephews; four great great-nieces; and three sisters-in-law, Ann Brooks Hinderlong, Betty Brooks and Evelyn Brooks.
Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday with Vigil services to be held at 8 p.m.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield with Rev. Father David Gaydosik as the Celebrant.
Burial will follow in St. Sylvester Catholic Cemetery, Woodsfield, with full military graveside services by Belmont Veterans Council of the V.F.W.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Sylvester School, 119 Wayne Street, Woodsfield, Ohio.
