DANIEL BECKER was born 1 May 1853 in Kassel, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia and died September 1924 in Hilda, Alberta. He married KATHARINA EBERHARDT on the 30th of January 1879 in Kassel, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia. She was born 7 May 1861 in Kassel, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia, daughter of JOHANNES EBERHARD and ELISABETHA HEUPEL and died 31st of October 1923 in Hilda, Alberta.
Men born in 1853 were included in the Russian draft lottery in the fall of 1874 and may have included Daniel. At that time military service was reduced to six years from the previous 20 years. It appears that Daniel was involved in the last Russo-Turkish War which Russia entered in 1877.
Daniel Becker, wife Katharina, sons Rudolph, Emil and Otto, daughter Lydia, daughter Pauline and her husband ADAM DARR with their three children arrived at New York City 15 April 1913 on the "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse" from Bremen, Germany on their way to Hilda, Alberta. We hear many accounts of German-Russian immigrants traveling in crowded conditions in steerage but on the passenger manifest the Daniel Becker family, and the relatives traveling with them, are shown as "second cabin passengers." It also notes that Daniel had $8,000.00, which is far more money than was recorded for most of the immigrants. Elaine Becker Morrison remembers her father telling about an oil mill run by the family. It may have been a lucrative business. Perhaps they pressed oil from sunflower seeds.
Daniel and Katharina filed for a homestead two miles south of the present village of Hilda. They lived there on the NE ¼ of Sec 23, Twp 17, Rge 2, W4 and passed on about ten years after immigrating to the area. In 2001 the large barn and several other buildings remained but the two-story frame home had been moved to an acreage west of Hilda and was no longer safe to enter.
Daniel, Katharina and son Otto are buried in the Baptist Church Cemetery two miles south of Hilda, Alberta, diagonally across the road from the Becker homestead. The location is NW ¼ of Sec 23, Twp 17, Rge 1, W4. After a dust storm that covered many tombstones a monument was erected showing the names of known burials.
OBITUARY of Daniel Becker, printed in Der Sendbote 15 October 1924, page 13, a German Baptist publication, translated by Elaine Becker Morrison:
Daniel Becker was born 1 May 1958 in Kassel, South Russia. The marriage with Katharina Eberhardt produced nine children: six daughters and three sons. Two of the daughters preceded the parents to the home above. In 1913 the family emigrated from Russia to America and settled near Hilda, Alberta. In 1919 Brother Becker and his wife were converted by the effectiveness of Brother Wahl and joined the Germantown congregation through baptism. The children all live in the vicinity except Emil who is preparing for the ministry at our seminary in Rochester (ed. New York). Last year the mother preceded the father to the heavenly home and the father longed to join her. He did not need to wait long. A stomach problem took hold of him and Brother Becker left this home for a better one in heaven. His age was 71 years, four months. He leaves four daughters, three sons, 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, many friends and acquaintances. Assisting at the funeral were pastors Martin of the Evangelical Congregation and Gross from the Congregational Church. Reported by J. Matz.
