Laura Linda Vossler was born November 15, 1915, to Christian and Maria (Schwind) Vossler on the family homestead near Terry, MT. When she was quite young her parents moved back to the Vossler homestead, located northeast of Zeeland, ND. They lived in a sod house, which her grandparents built when they homesteaded the land. She was the oldest of three daughters. She attended rural school in the area for grade school and graduated from high school in Zeeland, ND as the salutatorian of her class in 1934. After graduation she worked in a café in Wishek, ND and then went to Minneapolis for a short time to work.
She married Edwin Berreth on March 31, 1935 at St. Andrews Church in rural Zeeland, ND. They moved to Lodi, CA that spring. They lived there for about four years. She worked picking fruits and vegetables in season and also worked in the cannery for 33 1/3 cents an hour. In 1939 they moved back to South Dakota and rented a farm for one year and then bought a farm five miles northeast of Herreid. They moved into Herreid in October 1980. They enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family as long as they were able. Edwin and Laura were married 73 years.
She was a member of the Herreid Baptist Church. At church she was a member of the Women's Missionary Society. She was a member of the Ninenette Club with nine ladies from the Artas/Herreid area. She had many talents and hobbies. She was a wonderful painter and painted many beautiful paintings for family and friends and sold some. She sewed clothes and made quilts for her family. She worked at the Herreid Drug Store and sold Avon and Tupperware for a time as well. She collected stamps, polished rocks, made jewelry from those rocks, made pheasant feather hats and hat bands and made other craft items which she sold at the Mound City Hobby Show and locally for many years. She loved roses, irises and many other flowers which adorned her yard on the farm and in town. She will always be remembered for her kuchen and gingersnap cookies. Spending time with her family were always cherished memories.
