Edwin Berreth grew up on a farm near Artas, SD and as the oldest of 13 children he helped on the farm as soon as he was able. After his marriage, he and his wife Laura tried life in Lodi, CA, for about four years, but farming called him back.
They rented a farm for a season and then bought a farm northeast of Herreid, SD. Almost every day during the growing seasons he would go out to see how the crops were doing. Even after moving into Herreid, he drove out to the farm nearly every day to check on crops.
"He loved farming," his family said.
He was a member of Herreid Baptist Church for many years, served as a Sunday school teacher and was a deacon for several years. He had a great sense of humor and loved to joke and visit with people. For relaxation, he read and followed his favorite sport, baseball. Spending time with his family made for treasured memories.
In failing health, Edwin entered the Avera Eureka Health Care Center, Eureka, SD in where he died Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at the age of 96.
Edwin was born November 7, 1911, the son of Edward and Christina (Munsch) Berreth Sr. on the Berreth family homestead two miles north of Artas in Campbell County. He attended rural school and helped on the family farm.
On March 31, 1935, he was united in marriage with Laura L. Vossler at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church north of Zeeland, ND. After he helped his father plant the spring crop, he and Laura moved to California. In 1939, they moved back to South Dakota, rented a farm for a season before buying the farm five miles northeast of Herreid. They moved into Herreid in October of 1980.
