WILLIAM H. BERRETH
(As read by Nancy Frey)
Born April 14, 1910 in Lehr, North Dakota, the fifth of Henry and Lydia Berreth's 15 chi ldren, William H. Berreth passed away at age 87 years in Medicine Hat Hospital on June 3, 1997.
Henry and Lydia Berreth moved, with seven children, to a homestead in the Sagathun Distr ict in 1914. Bill spent a few of his earliest years living with the Henry B. Biederman family while taking his schooling at Northridge school.
Bill started farming with his eldest brother, Ted, at a young age. His enjoyment of hors es began during these years. He enjoyed many good years of racing and horse training. Four of his favorite horses over the years were: Beaut, Dark, Fox, and Queen.
In March of 1935, Bill married Stella Erman. Together they moved, with their daughter S ylvia, by horse and wagon to the Mantel place. They were blessed with two additional daughters, Isabella (Bella) and Lorraine (Lanny).
Together they farmed various locations in the Piapot area, until 1971, at which time the y moved to their home on Cypress Street in Maple Creek. During retirement, Bill was often found in the shade of his little yellow fishing truck, usually parked on the shore at Dixon Dam. Bill passed many an hour tending his annual potato crop and could be seen about on his daily shopping trips.
He had his own special sense of humor with a German twist. Bill took pleasure in a goo d game of checkers or cards and always enjoyed small children. He thoroughly enjoyed being a grandfather and a great-grandfather, always ready with a nickel (loonie as inflation hit) for the kids. These are some of the things family fondly recall.
Bill fell victim to Alzheimer's Disease and in June of 1995, he moved to Cypress Lodge ; he adjusted well, received excellent care and appeared to be content.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, six brothers, one sister and one son-in-law, Ernie F rey. He is survived by Stella, wife of 62 years, daughters Sylvia (Alfred Frey), Bella, and Lanny (John Kuiper), seven grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters.
Six of his great-grandsons were honored to be pallbearers: Trevor Frey, Micheal Hancock , Greg Frey, Darren Hancock, Shane Frey, and Jonathon Coderre.
In closing I feel honored to have been asked to help in preparing these few words to sum marize a long and fruitful life of a gentleman. Those of us who married into the family have always been treated as though we were long-time members (born into the family).
The funeral was held from the Maple Creek United Church, Maple Creek, Sask.,Friday, Jun e 6, with Rev. Gerald Kennedy officiating. Interment followed in the Maple Creek Cemetery.
Friends who so wish may remember Mr. Berreth with a gift to the Cypress Lodge Courtyar d Fund.
Binkley's Funeral Service of Maple Creek and Leader was in charge of arrangements.
