Jack R. Bowers, 87, of Bartonville, Ill. formerly of Taylorville, Ill., passed away at 8:44 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011 at his home.
Jack was born on Dec. 30, 1923, in Galesburg, Ill. to Charles and Mae (Vidler) Bowers. His mother died shortly after his birth and his father passed away when he was 12 years old. His grandmother, Isabelle "Belle" Hogan Vidler of Pana, Ill. and his Aunt Ruth Bowers Weakley of Waukegan, Ill., raised him. He married Evelyn L. Budds on Nov. 14, 1947. She survives.
He was also preceded in death one infant son, Charles Richard.
Surviving are three children, Delores (Steve) Payne of Lancaster, Ohio, Sue (Ron) Meinders of Bartonville, Ill. and Richard (Monica) Bowers of Pocahontas, Ill. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Christian (Brenda Marit) Payne, Catrina (Jim) Patrey, Benjamin Payne, Cynthia (Chris Heinrich) Meinders, John (Stephanie Aagaard) Bowers, Joshua (Katelyn Lantrip) Bowers; 14 great-grandchildren, Blake Payne, Darian Payne, Mason Patrey, Mirelle Patrey, Cedric Patrey, Hannah Patrey, Laurissa Douglas, Aly Heinrich, Ethan Heinrich, Brittni Heinrich, Alex Butcher, Helena Heinrich, Corey Heinrich and one unborn great-grandson due in December; and one cousin Joanne (Don) Whiteman of Stauton, Va.
Jack served in the U.S. Army, AACS Squadron 78th AAF Base Unit, from November 1942 to December 1945 as a Cryptographic Technician stationed in Alaska. He was a member of the American Legion, Limestone Post 979 in Bartonville, Ill.
Early in his career he repaired TV and radios in Pana, Ill., worked for Channel 20 in Springfield, Ill. as a cameraman. He then entered the field of electrical engineering working for Argonne National Laboratories in Argonne, Ill., Sangamo Electric in Springfield, Ill. and Marietta, Ga. and retired from Basler Electric in Highland, Ill. During his career as an electrical engineer he was awarded three patents.
After retirement he enjoyed repairing antique radios, square dancing and camping.
Graveside funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Tuesday July 12 at Mound Cemetery, in Pana, Ill. with the Rev. Ted Marrinon of Bethel Baptist Church in rural Taylorville officiating and graveside military rites by Pana Veterans Honor Guard. McCracken-Dean Funeral Home in Pana, Ill. is assisting the family with arrangements.
