  Joseph farmed with his brother Jacob, and lived with him. His father Joseph Bulfer Jr gave him the north 80 acres of his farm with the provision that he couldn't sell it as long as his parents lived. With the first load of oats that he sold from that farm he bought himself a pocket watch, an 18 size Waltham, 17 jewel with diamond end stones on the balance. It was always the standard time keeper at our house. Joseph purchased land in Martin County, Gelena Township, Section 34 240 acres. He purchased it on March 10, 1905 for $13200 and sold it Feb 24, 1914 for $22800. The years that he owned this property and lived in Illinois he went to inspect his farm a couple of times a year, and stayed with his brother John. John and the Heckels were friends and it was on one of these trips that he met Johanna Heckel.
