Harold Elton Permann was born on November 23, 1925 on a farm south of Delmont, South Dakota in Charles Mix County to Emil and Katherina (Tesky) Permann. He died at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center on August 12, 2006. Harold attended grade school at Maxim School in Bon Homme County. He received his 8th grade diploma and returned to work on the family homestead during his teen years. As a young man, Harold helped with the construction of the Fort Randall Dam. In 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War until 1952 when he was honorably discharged. He then returned to the family farm to help his parents. On April 12, 1953, he married Ruth Elsie Brosz at the Pilgrim Congregational Church. They lived on a farmsite southeast of Delmont where they farmed and began raising their family. In January of 1961, Harold moved his family to a farm northeast of Wagner, South Dakota where he farmed until the time of his retirement in 1999. That winter, he and Ruth moved to their home in Tripp. In November of 2004, Harold moved to the Tripp Good Samaritan Center where he lived until the time of his death. Harold enjoyed farming and the outdoors. He liked spending time with friends and neighbors. During his lifetime, he was active in the Salem Reformed Church of rural Delmont and the Bethany United Church of Christ in Delmont. He served on the church board in Delmont and was also active on the township board for 33 years. At the time of his death, he was a member of Frieden's Reformed United Church of Christ in Tripp. He was a member of both the Wagner V.F.W. and the Tripp American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Tripp; seven children: Steve (Joyce) Permann of Tripp, Karen (Casey) Carda of Armour, South Dakota, Mary (Douglas) Gunnare of Delmont, Dennis (Colleen) Permann of Pickstown, South Dakota, Joel Permann and special friend Darcy Kepplinger of Delmont, Cheryl (Russell) Tesch of Estelline, South Dakota, and Nancy (Jeff) Tichy of Chamberlain, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren; two sisters: Velda Peters and Darlene (Harvey) Weisser, both of Wagner; his only aunt, Anna Sandau of Lodi, California; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Willard, Gilbert, and Arben; two sisters: Lorraine Schwaderer and Alice Stolz; three brothers-in-law, Elmer Peters, Richard Schwaderer and Rueben Stolz; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Burial in Frieden's Reformed UCC Cemetery, Tripp, SD.
Military Graveside Rites by Tripp Jelkin-Harms American Legion Post # 142 and Wagner Rollie Bucholz V.F.W. Post # 7319.
