Elmer S. Steiner
Elmer S. Steiner, 84, of Scranton, ND, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.
Mass of Christian Burial for Elmer will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Scranton. Fr. Stephen Folorunso will celebrate the Mass with burial to follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. There will be a Rosary and Vigil Service on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Elmer Simon Steiner was born in Mott, ND on June 12, 1932 to Leonard & Rose (Messmer) Steiner. Tough times in North Dakota during the depresssion drove the family to move to the West Coast where Elmer started & flunked 1st grade as he only spoke German.
In 1943 the family returned to North Dakota & bought the property where Elmer & siblings attended Scranton Public School. Elmer played basketball on the State Class C Championship team his senior year and exactly 50 years later his grandsons Caleb Case & Jarret Wanek were proud to carry that legacy in the year 2000 to the State Class B tournament.
After graduation in 1951, Elmer worked for Gerbig Ranch in the Badlands & a stint at Scranton Equity. In 1956 he moved to Rapid City to work for Knect Lumber, there his younger sister, Rita MacFarlane, set him up on a blind date with his love & lifelong wife, Christina Fischer, April 2, 1956 she became Christina Steiner.
Born to this union were 5 children: Greg, Nadine, Melissa, Tracy & Paul whom Elmer spoiled shamelessly. When they were hailed out in 1960 they moved to Miles City where Elmer worked building houses with his Uncle Mike Steiner until they returned to the family farm in 1962.
Elmer's great joys were spoiling any & all kids – whom he called monkeys; and traveling – he said that he never regretted taking any of the trips he & Chris took to explore the United States. Elmer also enjoyed water skiing & taught all who wanted to learn to ski & enjoy the water. Elmer & friends even built a ski jump at Gascoyne Lake where they drank a little beer & told tall tales.
In 1970 with brother Ken & sister-in-law Sharon Steiner they purchased the Bowman Theater which they enjoyed and ran for 34 years.
Elmer retired from farming at 67 already enjoying their annual trips to winter in South Texas for 20 years with Chris. Elmer always wanted to listen to music he loved, drink lots of coffee – or honey whiskey & always ate his dessert first!
If we left out anyone or anything – Elmer would say “It is what it is” or “What the heck”.
Elmer is preceeded in death by his parents Leonard & Rose (Messmer) Steiner & infant granddaughter Alexandra Elise Steiner.
Left to mourn Elmer are his beloved wife of 61 years, Christina (Fischer) Steiner, Greg & Cindy (Peterson) Steiner, Jim & Nadine (Steiner) Wanek, Melissa (Steiner) Case, Tracy & Elaine Sue (Wilson) Steiner, Paul & Shelly (Senn) Steiner; Grandchildren: Justin & Serena (Walters) Steiner, Dan & Tracy (Fordahl) Wanek, Angie Wanek, Sara Steiner, Caleb & Chelsea (Holstein) Case, Jarret & Janet (Buchmeier) Wanek, Isidro & Samantha (Steiner) Zapata, Tyler Steiner, Megan Case, Zachary (Boog) Steiner, Jacob Thomas (JT) Steiner & 10 Great Grandkids.
