GERSTLE, GENE EDWARD, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012, at the age of 89.
He was born May 10, 1923 in Louisville to the late Frank Ferdinand Gerstle and the late Mary Antoinette Dell Gerstle.
He graduated from St. X High School and the University of Louisville.
Gene had a very positive outlook on life, and will be missed by his family and friends. He was an enthusiastic U of L Cardinals fan, and was an avid roller skater.
He is survived by children, Catherine Dianne Niedner (Malcolm) in Greenbelt, MD, Julie Sebastian (Russell) in Omaha, NE, Don Gerstle (Stefanie) in Tucson, AZ, Val Gerstle (and friend Bob Wiedemer) in Cincinnati, OH, and Amy Gerstle in Louisville; stepson, Charles Hibbs (Patricia) in Louisville; four grandchildren, Charles Niedner in Greenbelt, MD, Kim Kleinhans (Mike) in Atlanta, GA, Christi Gerstle in Los Angeles, CA, and Ted Gerstle (Melissa) in Chicago, IL; step-grandsons, Mark Hibbs in Burkburnett, TX, David Hibbs in Louisville, and Donald Hibbs (Cindy) in Louisville; step-granddaughters, Robin Murphy (Eddie) in Corydon, IN, and Jennifer Childers (Brian); and 11 step-great-grandchildren; and step-nephew, John Jumpp, all in Louisville.
Friends and family may visit Sunday, December 30, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway. A funeral Mass to celebrate Gene's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday December 31, 2012 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church on 6000 Preston Highway, with interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Moose Lodge or to the University of Louisville.
