Steve Ruef, a long time resident of Nehalem, died peacefully on January 4, 2011 with family by his side. Steve battled cancer for 3-1/2 years, beating the odds many times. He faced this battle with courage and strength but never let the disease define him. He will always be remembered for the kind-hearted, fun loving person he was.
Steve loved the outdoors and fly fishing was his passion. He tied his own flies and told some great fish stories. Most of them true. He was a real jokester but he always spoke from his heart and could be trusted with anything. He was a wonderful husband, loving dad and fun grandpa. Family always came first. Being a grandpa brought him so much joy.
Steve was married to his high school sweetheart Mary Dickey Ruef for 46 years. He enjoyed his two children and their families; Brian Ruef and April Eckstrom of Nehalem and their daughter Alivia (2 yrs); and Jennifer Ruef Bauer and Jeremy Bauer of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and their daughters Lauren (6 yrs) and Annelise (3 yrs). Steve is also survived by his father Alfred Ruef, 92 years old, of Manzanita and his brother, Ken Ruef, of Auburn, Washington.
Steve retired as a meatcutter at Tillamook Safeway in 2004 after 29 years.
If you would like to honor Steve's memory, his wish was for donations to go to the Tillamook County Secret Angels. The non-profit works with children and families in the community to make sure they have school clothes/supplies, birthday and Christmas gifts as well as basic necessities during the year. The address is TCSA, P.O. Box 208 Nehalem, OR, 97131.
Steve will be greatly missed and remembered often. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 14, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's By The Sea in Rockaway Beach.
