Funeral services for former Ballston resident Marion Douglas Thomas of Lake Oswego will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, in The Provincial House Chapel at Mary's Woods in Lake Oswego. Father Richard Berg will officiate.
Private interment will be held at St. James Catholic Cemetery in McMinnville. Arrangements are being handled by Macy & Son Funeral Directors.
Mr. Thomas died at Providence Medical Center in Portland on Thursday, May 17, 2007. He was 89.
Born in Ballston on Oct. 31, 1917, he was the son of Henry and Viola (Reynolds) Thomas. He met Emily Vollman while growing up there, and the couple married on Oct. 21, 1939, in Sheridan.
Over the years, they lived in Junction City, Tigard, Pendleton, Portland, Depoe Bay, Salem and Lake Oswego. He worked various farm and mill jobs until 1951, when he built and ran a stud mill.
In 1960, he bought a machinery business, which he renamed Marion's Roller Bar. The couple ran the business together, later joined by their son and grandsons.
Mr. Thomas enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son. He also like to take his RV to the coast and investigate new places.
"He was dedicated to his family," relatives said. "He was a loving role model to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren."
Mr. Thomas is survived by a son, Richard of Portland; a daughter, Linda LaPlante of Corvallis; two sisters, Myrtle Barber of Willamina and Jo Nunley of Eugene; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2006 and by two brothers, Virgil and James.
