Wesley Lorane Hellwig
Funeral Services for Wesley Lorane Hellwig, 84 of Sisseton, SD were held on Monday, December 29, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sisseton High School Gymnasium (Practice Facility), Sisseton, SD, with Joe Hobbs and Chris Postma officiating. Pianist was Susan Eicher with a duet by Ron and Arlene Freesemann. Pallbearers were Wesley's grandchildren, Randy Erickson, Cory Erickson, Devin Erickson, Kim Hellwig-Nordby, Blaine Hellwig, Steve Hellwig, Rick Hellwig, Ron Hellwig, Chad Hellwig, Kelli Hellwig-Justiniano, and Troy Hellwig. Interment was in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Visitation was Sunday, December 28, 2003 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cahill Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to the services at the Gym on Monday. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Wes was born on June 18, 1919 in Hutchinson County, SD, to John O. and Helen (Hintz) Hellwig. He attended school at Menno, SD. Wes was united in marriage to Goldie Guthmiller on August 28, 1937 in Parker, SD. The couple lived in Menno for a short period before moving to Sioux Falls, SD where Wes worked in the dairy business.
In 1940 the couple moved near Lake City, SD where they began ranching. In 1941 they purchased a ranch near Buffalo Lake, in Marshall County where they raised cattle. Wes and Goldie moved into Sisseton in the late 1940's.
In 1947, Wes and Goldie became partners in the Sisseton Livestock Auction. In 1960, the Sisseton Sales Barn was officially designated as a nationally certified livestock market.
In 1963, Wes left the operation, due to ill health, and his sons, LeRoy and Dennis, took over managing the business, with their younger brother, Lawrence joining the business in 1967. Wes and Goldie also operated the Hellwig Floor Covering and Miracle Water in Sisseton. Goldie passed away on March 8, 2002. Wes was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed snowmobiling and traveling. Wes passed away on December 23, 2003 at his home rural Sisseton.
Wes is survived by four children, Connie and husband, Wally Erickson of Sun City Center, FL, LeRoy and wife, Lavonne Hellwig of Sisseton, SD, Dennis and wife, Cherie Hellwig of Aberdeen, SD, and Lawrence and wife, Mary Hellwig of Sisseton, SD; one brother, Williard and wife, Lucille Hellwig of Menno, SD; two sisters, Linda VerBeek of Viborg, SD and Florence Schatz of Scotland, SD; eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Wes was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Goldie; one son, Gene; one brother, Robert Hellwig; and two sisters, Gin and Mabel.
