Edwin was born March 9, 1912, at Tripp, S.D., to John and Caroline (Hirsch) Bender. The family moved to Washburn in 1916. He attended rural Washburn schools and worked for area farmers, and in local coal mines as a young man.
On May 23, 1937, he married Leontina Weisz at Underwood. They farmed in the Underwood-Washburn area, and Ed worked on the construction of the Garrison Dam intake structure. They moved to Bismarck in 1959, where he worked at various service stations as a mechanic until retiring in 1979.
During his retirement years he enjoyed camping trips with his wife and family, his workshop and tending his yard and bountiful garden. He was always ready to help his children with projects and rescue his daughters when they needed any help with their cars.
He entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in 1996, and resided there until his recent hospitalization.
Ed was a very special husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Lee; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dar and James Rezmer, Tampa, Fla., and Bev and Tom Anderson-Fretty, Bismarck; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Minon, Jamestown, David and Shirley, Thornton, Colo., Rodney and Dianne, Bismarck, and Jack, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ella Bender, Bismarck.
