Sharon died Sunday, March 29, 2020 at Eureka Community Health Services Avera.
Sharon Kay Kunz was born October 26, 1951 to Milton and Leona (Mohr) Schumacher at Eureka, SD. She grew up in Eureka, graduating from Eureka High School with the class of 1969. She then attended and graduated from Northern State College in 1971.
Sharon was united in marriage to Keith Kunz on October 16, 1971 at St. Paul?s United Church of Christ in Eureka. Keith and Sharon shared a love for the farm. The October date for marriage was chosen since this time of year signified traditionally the end of the summer workload. With crisp mornings and sun-drenched afternoons, the date was perfect, with nothing to stand in the way of the wedding day or the many anniversaries to come?except opening pheasant season. Yikes.
After graduating from college, Sharon became employed with Northwest German Farmer?s Mutual Insurance Co. (NWGF). She began as a Line Underwriter and in 1980 she became the Underwriting Manager and Corporate Secretary. In 2017, Sharon assumed the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO). For 5 plus years, Sharon was a board member of NWGF.
Sharon loved her job and its many daily challenges. She loved interacting with many of the agents, agencies, co-workers and board members. She took great pride in problem solving and providing direction for not only NWGF as a company, but also for its many clients. It was not her career goal to reach 50 years of employment with NWGF but somewhere along the way she changed her mind and looked fondly upon the prospect of achieving exactly that. Sadly, cancer wouldn?t allow that goal to become a reality. What cancer cannot diminish however, is her legacy of professionalism, hard work, and an attitude that no problem was unsolvable or insurmountable.
Sharon had a deep love for Keith which for his sake was a tremendous blessing, for without such a boundless love, she would have surely ?cracked? him with a broken-off shovel handle after one of his countless episodes of him scaring her. If you?ve read this and don?t know what it means, consult any family member or any person who has been employed at the McPherson County courthouse.
Sharon also had a deep love for her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Her love wasn?t limited to Keith and her family as she ?cooked? and Keith ?turned? more batches of home-made ice cream for those who needed a pick-me-up, needed to convalesce, celebrate a birthday or simply just because.
Sharon loved gardening, especially planting and caring for the flowers around the house. Some perennial and many, many annuals. A love of flowers such that, it led her to question the ?less than full-size? nature of their pickup and how that became the limiting factor of her springtime blossom buying at all the nurseries in Aberdeen.
Sharon also liked to read, loved being with her friends and family and found nothing wrong with spending a quiet weekend at home.
Sharon had a tremendous reverence for the farm on which she grew up and had a deep love for the land that her family called home. While her soul is surely with the Lord, her ashes will be kept on that land. This spot where there was once a large pioneer garden surrounded by a century old rock wall is the location Keith and Sharon have chosen for people to reflect and enjoy memories of her life.
Grateful for having shared Sharon?s life are her husband, Keith; five sisters-in-law, Carol Weidmeier of Brighton, CO, Marlene Keszler of Grass Lake, MI, Charlotte Moldenhauer of Great Falls, MT, Joann (Delmar) Metzger of Eureka and Phyllis (David) Roggenkamp of Eureka; brother-in-law, Ken (Nina) Kunz of Eureka, her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers-in-law, Elmer Weidmeier, Jerry Keszler and Donovan Moldenhauer and in-laws, John and Minnie Kunz.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to Eureka Community Health Services Avera. Later, this summer or fall, Sharon?s family will be hosting a celebration of Sharon?s life.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
