Edna Melba Smith, 92, died on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at her home in Woodland following a stroke. Born Edna Melba Haskellin in Pinole, on June 11, 1917, she had been a Woodland resident for more than 75 years. She was married to the late Edward john Smith for 58 years. Her parents, Arthur S. and Edna G. Haskell, who were also long-time residents of Woodland.
A third generation Californian, Edna was a member of Native Daughters of the Golden West. She was also a member of Women of the Moose and the Town and Country Club, and attended St. John's United Church of Christ in Woodland. Until recent years, her favorite pastimes were crocheting and attending plays at the Woodland Opera House.
She is survived by her daughters, Melora Speer of Woodland, Vera Arthur of Winters, and Edna Westerbeck of Fresno; and a son, John E. Smith of Garden Grove; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday, July 9, at the Woodland Cemetery, 800 West St., Woodland, where she will be laid to rest with her husband. The Rev. Jerry Wells of St. John's United Church of Christ will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Woodland Opera House, or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.
