Life Legacy
Eva Belle Schnetzer, age 89, of Wolsey, died on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Huron, with burial at the Broadland Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m., Monday, May 2, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, and a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m. Monday night; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Eva Belle Baum was born August 30, 1921 in Huron, to Fred Sr. and Edith (Miller) Baum. She attended Cain Creek grade school, Huron High School and graduated from Huron College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Teaching. She was a member of Gamma Theta Rho Sorority.
As a teenager she was the pitcher for a girl?s softball team and played other surrounding town?s girls teams. Eva Belle taught at Cain Creek School, Valley #1 school, and Bonilla School for two years, before finishing her teaching career at the Wolsey School and retiring in 1981. Eva Belle continued to substitute teach for a number of years after retirement, and received a plaque from the Wolsey School Board, for 25 years of dedicated service to the children of Wolsey. In 1997, she received ?Reminiscent Teacher Award? granted by the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association, in recognition of dedicated service to education.
On June 4, 1946, Eva Belle married Ward Schnetzer and they made their home on the family farm northwest of Wolsey.
Eva Belle was a member of of the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, SD. She was also a member of the South Dakota Education Association and the Huron Area Retired Teachers, serving as President, Secretary, Membership Chair, and Health Committee. She served as the leader for various 4-H clubs, and was also a Cub Scout Leader.
Eva Belle was also a member, of the BYY?s (Be Wise) Extension Club for 54 years, and held all offices.
Eva Belle served on the Wolsey Centennial Committee in 1989, and wrote articles about Wolsey pioneers for the Wolsey newspaper. Eva Belle received a certificate from the Writers School in Reading. CT, and had the poem, ?Blessings of Life? published in the ?Book of World Poetry?
Eva Belle enjoyed gardening, reading, embroidery work, and family time with grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared in Eva Belle?s life are her 3 sons, James (Marilyn) Schnetzer, and Jack Schnetzer, both of Wolsey, SD, and Mark (Sylvia) Schnetzer, of Sioux Falls, SD; 7 grandchildren: Kathy (Matt) Micheel, Vicki (Randy) Nelson, Joseph, Teresa, Jessica, Erin, and Ashley Schnetzer; 3 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Tucker Micheel, Selma Nelson; 2 brothers, Fred (Dorothy) Baum Jr., of Huron, SD, and Warren Baum, of Sioux City, IA; sister, Ila (Mac) Haskell, of Huron, SD; two special cousins, Dorothy Koch and Belle Lyon; several nieces and nephews.
Eva Belle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ward, in 2000; granddaughter, Karen Rae Schnetzer; brother-in-law, Paul Ramsell; and sister-in-law, Helen Baum.
