Elmer Neuharth
DRAKE- Elmer "Buddy" Neuharth, 65, Drake, went to his heavenly Father on April 26, 2006, at SCCI Hospital, Mandan. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Drake. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home, Drake.
Elmer Neuharth, or "Buddy" as he was known and loved by all, was born Oct. 18, 1940, in McClusky to Albert J. and Marie (Bender) Neuharth, the youngest of 13 children. He grew up in the McClusky area and graduated from McClusky High School in 1960. He then attended and graduated from Molar Barber College in Fargo and began working at the Drake Barber Shop for Ferdinand Hoffer. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 during the Cuban conflict and was on a ship to Cuba when they were called back.
Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Bud began working at Tom's Barber Shop in Minot, where he met Shirley Uhlich, his future wife. They were married Aug. 8, 1965, in Drake. They continued to reside in Minot until 1970, when Bud purchased the Drake Barber Shop in Drake, where they have since resided. Bud continued to barber until his recent illness.
He enjoyed visiting with all his customers and families, and could have written books on their stories of history about the early days around Drake. He began driving a school bus on a regular route in 1990. He loved the kids and could tell many funny stories that were all in the line of "kids say the darndest things."
When not in Drake, he was at his beloved lake cabin at Crooked Lake and had planned to retire there. He always said he needed another lawn to mow. Bud had a love of hunting, fishing, being with his family and just enjoying life in general.
Bud was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the church council in his earlier years. He served on the Drake Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years before his cancer surgery in 1996. He was a member of the Drake Commercial Club, the David D. Nehrenberg American Legion Post No. 32, Drake, a longtime social member of the Drake Golf Club and was currently serving on the Drake City Council.
In their 40-year marriage, Bud and Shirley had three wonderful sons who were, and always will be, his greatest joy. He was recently given a beautiful granddaughter, Valerie Elizabeth, whom he'd only seen in pictures.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Scott (Suzanne) and granddaughter, Valerie, Church Point, La., Bradley (Sarah), Bismarck, and Travis, Fargo; four brothers, Emil (Mildred), Bismarck, Robert (Irene) and Herbert, McClusky, and Alvin (Eunice), Bismarck; and five sisters, Helen Wahl, Bismarck, Edna Neuharth, McClusky, Mathilda Holcomb, Mont., Marian (Bob) Bronson, Colorado, and Evelyn (Carl) Peter, Valley City.
He was preceded into his heavenly eternal home by his parents; brother, Edwin; and two sisters, Clara and Gladys.
