- [S927] Obituary.
Martha Fischer, 88, Bismarck, formerly of Turtle Lake, died Feb. 18, 2002, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Karen Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Martha Bender was born April 15, 1913, at rural Mercer to Adolph and Magdalena (Singer) Bender. She married John J. Fischer on Oct. 13, 1932, at Mercer. They lived and farmed southwest of Mercer until 1972. They retired from farming and moved to Turtle Lake. John passed away in September 1989. In October 1997, Martha moved to the Primrose Apartments in Bismarck, where she had lived for the last four years.
She will be remembered for her active involvement on the farm. She was capable of running all the farm machinery, and was very mechanically inclined. In many cases, she would fix farm machinery and household appliances without any assistance.
She enjoyed cooking and having company over to her house. Despite her failing eyesight, she remained cheerful and always maintained a positive attitude. She enjoyed entertaining and jesting her friends. She held a special place in her heart for her long-time neighbors, the Gordon Nelson family.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Charlotte Fischer, Bismarck; her sister, Emma Kurtz, Bismarck; her brother, Otto Bender, Seminole, Okla.; four step-grandchildren, Tom Knapp, Minneapolis, Mark Knapp, Littleton, Colo., Jennifer Regennitter, Englewood, Colo., and Phillip Knapp, Bailey, Colo.; three step-great-grandchildren, Kristal Senger, Amber Senger and Calyb Fischer Knapp; two sisters-in-law, Emma Fischer, Mercer, and Helen Fischer, Turtle Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, John Bender.
