Barbara WEINMAN
1/28/1917 to 2/22/07
A long time resident of Queen Anne hill, died quietly in her sleep on February 22, 2007. Funeral Services are scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Seattle. Mrs. Weinman is survived by her three children, (Charlene Henderson of Renton, Gregory and Angela Weinman of Belmont, CA, and Roberta and George Lewandowski of Mercer Island) as well as seven grandchildren and one great grandchild: Rob Henderson (Gretchen Rowe) of Renton; Rachel and Rick Eslava and daughter, Brandy; Jessica Weinman, Travis Weinman, Duncan Weinman and Elliott Weinman; Heather Lewndowski and partner, Nikki Wiggins. Mrs. Weinman was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Robert "Bob" Weinman. Barbara had a lifelong love of learning and travel. In the days when schooling wasn't considered very important for girls beyond basic reading and 'rithmitic, she moved from her family farm to the nearby town (Havre, Montana), where she worked at a hospital to support herself and attend high school. She went on to a two year college and became a teacher in a one-room school house in Cottonwood. She always stressed a love of learning, reading, and self reliance during the difficult times of life, and helped her kids and grandkids pursue educations beyond high school. After her family was grown, Barbara studied family history and genealogy. She traveled with some cousins to the Alsace region of Germany, finding the ancestral Keller home village of Wintzenbach. Later, she visited the Odessa region of Russia, where her ancestors farmed before coming to America in 1915 to homestead in Kansas and Montana. Barbara was fluent in German, and translated letters from German script to English for friends she met through the two local Germans from Russia organizations. She said that the family was German during their roughly 200 years in Russia, but became American when they moved here. Barbara was kind to neighbors and to those in need, volunteering at the St. Anne's church, and volunteering to help old people get to shopping and errands. She will be remembered fondly for her sense of humor and spirit of adventure, and will be sorely missed by her children, grandchildren, and the many relatives and neighbors she enjoyed in life. In remembrance, she would ask you to enjoy your loved ones while they are still with you.
