Arthur ?Art? Bender, 88, Wishek, N.D., died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at Wishek Home for the Aged, Wishek.
Mr. Bender was born Nov. 9, 1922, near Danzig, N.D., the son of Fred and Emelia (Miller) Bender. He grew up on the family farm 12 miles south of Wishek. He married Phyllis Wolf on Sept. 5, 1948. They purchased the family farm. They raised black Angus cattle for many years and farmed the land. He was a cattle buyer for others until 1973. At that time, they built a home in Wishek. He became a Vermeer dealer selling balers. She died Jan. 30, 1992. He married Dorothy Nordsletten on Feb. 3, 1996. He was member of Gideons International, First Baptist Church, Wishek, serving as deacon and teaching Sunday school for 65 years, and a member of Lions, serving as district governor in 1990-1991. He served on the boards of Crystal Springs Camp, Bismarck Baptist Home and Steer Inc., where he assisted with cattle sold for missions worldwide. He enjoyed telling jokes and playing songs on his organ for nursing home residents.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Connie (Glenn) Curlett; four stepdaughters, Ruth (Dale) Schwartz, Mary (Todd) Bertelson, Lois (Ric) Soderstrom and Judy (Doug) Johnson; a stepson, Daniel (Mary) Nordsletten; a sister, Irene Schauer; three grandsons; 11 stepgrandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; a daughter, Carol Ann Bender; his parents; two brothers, an infant and Walter; and a sister, Martha Kautz.
Services: 1 p.m. today, First Baptist Church, Wishek.
Visitation: one hour before the service at the church. Arrangements by Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek.
Burial: Wishek City Cemetery, Wishek.
Memorials: Gideons International, Lions, First Baptist Church, Steer Inc. or Crystal Springs Camp.
