Frederick Bender Birth: Jan. 6, 1879 Velykokomarivka Odes'ka, Ukraine Death: Apr. 26, 1966 Medicine Hat Alberta, Canada Frederick BENDER born at Kassel, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia, was the son of Christian BENDER and Elisabetha GROSSHANS. In search of a better life, after leaving the port of Bremen, Germany on the 27th of May 1913, the Frederick BENDER family arrived at Ellis Island, New York aboard the SS "Kronprinzessin Cecilie" on the 3rd of Jun 1913. Their final USA destination was to be somewhere near Eureka,South Dakota to meet up with his uncle, Friedrich BENDER. The ship's manifest also revealed that Frederick apparently had $3,450 in his pocket of whatever currency it may have been at that time. After briefly visiting with relatives in the Dakotas all family members eventually continued on by train to Irvine, Alberta, Canada. Since the BENDER family wanted to settle near relatives that had already settled in the Hilda area and homesteads were already scarce there, Frederick purchased the 320 acre W ½ of Sec 8, Twp 18, Rge 1, W 4th, from the Hudson's Bay Co. Also after an unknown homesteader in 1915 dropped his rights to the NW ¼ of Sec 35, Twp 17, Rge 2, W 4th, Frederick BENDER filed for a homestead on that 160 acre parcel of land. BENDER Obituary; Mr. Frederick BENDER, resident of 801A 5th Street SE passed away early Tuesday morning April 26th in the Medicine Hat General Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Kassel South Russia on January 6, 1879 he was raised and educated there. Married Miss Justina BECKER in Russia on May 7, 1905 and they celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in 1965. They immigrated to Canada in 1913 and settled on a homestead in the Hilda district, where they farmed continuously until retirement in 1938. Mr. &. Mrs. BENDER moved into the village of Hilda that year and resided in Hilda until moving to Medicine Hat in 1956. They then resided here until Mr. BENDER's passing. He was predeceased by a son Otto in infancy, a son Jack in 1932 and a daughter Celia in 1921. Surviving his passing are his beloved wife Justina of Medicine Hat, three daughters; Mrs. Art (Pauline SMITH and Edna McNEILL of Calgary, Alberta and Mrs. Salvin (Lil) NEUMILLER of Torrington, Alberta and three sons; Adam of Hilda, Alberta, George and Christian of Medicine Hat. Also surviving are 16 Grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren and a sister Mrs. Caroline ENGEL of Lodi, California. Rev. G. POSCHWATTA will conduct the funeral service in Grace Baptist Church on Friday afternoon at 3:30 PM. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery under the direction of the Pattison Funeral Home.
