Margaret H. Kastner, 88, died peacefully May 2, 2007, in Kirkland, Wash., surrounded by her son and daughter. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher serving as celebrant. Margaret was born March 22, 1919, in Mandan, the daughter of Ambrose and Bertha (Schmidt) Renner. She was raised and educated in Mandan. She was fond of memories as a MHS football cheerleader. Following graduation from Mandan High School, she attended Dickinson Teachers College, where she was awarded her teacher's certificate. She went on to teach in rural schools including Crown Butte, St. Anthony and Glen Ullin. She assisted the World War II effort by working on airplanes and in shipyards in Texas, California and Washington. She also displayed her patriotism by serving as a USO Girl. Though she and Victor had previously known each other, it was after the war that she and Victor S. Kastner married, Oct. 17, 1946, in Seattle.
Her social graces and outgoing personality were immediately recognized and appreciated by all who met her. She could literally visit with anyone. Margaret loved to dance. She and Victor attended ballroom clubs whenever they could. The couple lived in Washington until 1977, when they returned to Mandan to be closer to family.
Margaret's lifelong interest in antiques began when, as a young teacher, she had the opportunity to live in the historic Maj. Hanley House, in Mandan. Her home was filled with antiques that she purchased and restored.
Margaret will be dearly missed by her daughter, Constance F. Dunn, Pacific Grove, Calif.; her son and daughter-in-law, James (Sonja), Redmond, Wash.; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Matt Renner, Beverly Hills, Calif., Lawrence (Betty) and Nick (Mary), both of Mandan, Tony (Dorothy), Moorhead, Minn., and Ed (Frances), Milwaukee; six sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Moser, Seattle, Bridget Zander, Tacoma, Wash., Pauline Adams, Camarillo, Calif., Clementine (Mike) Willihnganz, Milwaukee, Vi (Mel) Kruchten, Asheville, N.C., and Ida Nelson, Ladysmith, Wis.; and two grandchildren, Molly and Nick Kastner.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Victor; her parents; one brother, Albert Renner; and two sisters, Evelyn Homm and Rose Mischel.
