Ralph A. Leingang, 86, died June 25, 2011, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June, 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military honors provided by VFW Post No. 707 and the American Legion Post No. 40.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a parish vigil. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
Ralph was born Sept. 20, 1924, to Anton and Margaret (Bullinger) Leingang. He attended rural school in the Solen Area. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1944 to 1946. A high point during this time was where he personally guarded General Dwight D. Eisenhauer. On Jan. 14, 1947, he married Eva Magilke in Solen. In 1960, they moved to Fort Yates.
Ralph was involved in various businesses: a gas station, office building, trailer court and owner operator of the Pelican Inn. His management style was unique; it included a hands-on no-nonsense approach, combined with a clever sense of humor. Working was a way of life for Ralph and his family. He was also a Sioux County coroner. He loved nature and working with cattle and horses, where he also owned and operated his own ranch.
Ralph will be deeply missed by his wife of 64 years, Eva, Bismarck; daughter, Wanda (Dan) Schneider, Underwood; sons, Terry (Beverly), Parshall, and Raphael Jr. (Sherie), Havlocke, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Sarah (Bill Galvin) Leingang, Pick City; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Schaf and Josephine Ressler, both of Mandan; and brother-in-law, Jim Odell, Tennessee.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ron; sisters, Anna Schwengler, Clara Eisenbeis, Bertha Magilke, Appolonia Kary and Lula Odell; and brothers, Nick, Ed, Alex, George, John, Tony and Adam.
Memorials may be directed to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
