Eleanor Joan Rehg, 88, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in the presence of her daughter in Paso Robles. Eleanor was born in St. Louis, Mo., in December 1924, where she attended both elementary and high school. When Eleanor was 15 years old, she caught the eye of the handsome Elmer Paul Rehg. They were married three years later, when Eleanor was 18 and Elmer was 21, shortly before Elmer was shipped off to the Pacific during World War II. During her late teens, and throughout the War, Eleanor worked for Bussmann Fuse Company and continued to work there until her daughter, Charmaine, was born in 1952. Her daughter, Yvonne, was born two years later. Eleanor was a hands-on mother. She was a scout leader for Charmaine's Girl Scout troop and made uniforms for both daughters when they were drum majorettes. Eleanor made sure that her daughters were always dressed in the latest fashions. When money was tight she would take the girls to department stores to pick out Christmas and Easter dresses and then purchase patterns and fabric to make exact replicas of the dresses at a lower cost. In 1967, Eleanor returned to the workforce as a cashier and bookkeeper for Schnucks '? the largest family-run grocery chain in the St. Louis area. There, she was repeatedly rewarded for her accuracy. More than once she was recognized as "Checker of the Year." Eleanor loved to travel, and she and Elmer took their girls to Florida every other summer throughout their childhoods and teens. When their grandson, Nathan, was born, they introduced him to Florida and took him to Disneyworld and Treasure Island throughout his childhood. After Eleanor retired from Schnucks in 1987, she and Elmer visited Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean, and traveled to Germany to visit the ancestral home of the Rehg family. Retirement did not slow Eleanor down. She and Elmer enrolled in the swimming program at their local community college, where Eleanor was soon swimming up to three miles per week. They worked as volunteer ushers during live performances at the St. Louis Fox Theatre and attended special events throughout the St. Louis area. When Elmer started showing symptoms of Parkinson's disease in 2006, it became clear that he and Eleanor needed to be near their children, who had migrated to California. In October 2006, they moved to Paso Robles to be near their daughter, Yvonne. As Elmer's health declined, Eleanor cared for him in their home until it became necessary to move him into a residential care facility shortly before his death in November 2010. After Elmer died, Eleanor fell into a deep depression, followed by dementia. By early 2013, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. She also suffered from osteoarthritis, which robbed her of the ability to walk. Eleanor was moved under the loving care of the Yellow Rose Inn Senior Assisted Living in late December 2012. She died of colon failure with Yvonne at her side. Eleanor is survived by her sister, Jane; brother, Russell, of the St. Louis area; daughters Charmaine Rehg of Springfield, Ore.; Yvonne Rehg Smith (Vic) of Atascadero; grandson, Nathan Zygmund (Jenner) of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; and sister, Geraldine. Her remains will be interred during a private ceremony in Paso Robles, and a memorial will be held in her honor in St. Louis
