Freeman Courier, SD, April, 1964 —
Death with the extreme suddenness that this generation has learned to associate with it's approach, has reached in another of the homes of this family. With the unexpectedness that has become almost commonplace there was removed from our midst—Gideon Emanuel Handel, who was stricken with a heart seizure late in the evening of April 5th, at his farm near Freeman.
Mr. Handel was born September 26th, 1911 at Menno, South Dakota. He was one of twelve children born to Johannes Handel Jr., and his wife Katharina Mehlhaf Handel.
He was baptized into the Christian Faith by Rev. Rittershaus. Upon being instructed in the doctrines and practices of the Holly Scriptures, he was received into communicant membership of the Salem Reformed Church, Menno, South Dakota, by making confession of his Christian faith and being confirmed therein. He later transferred membership to the Bethlehem Reformed Church at Freeman, S. Dak., of which he was a faithful member until his death.
The marriage of the deceased to Miss Verlinda Aman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Aman, Freeman, S.D., took place on September 24th, 1933. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Zogg.
The newly married couple made their home on a farm near Menno, S.D., until the year of 1944, at which time they moved to a farm northwest of Freeman, where he resided until the time of his death.
To this couple, four children were born. Kenneth of Freeman, married to Corrine Schmuck; Sylvia, who died in infancy; Virginia, married to Curtis Rist of Centerville, S.D.; and Patricia, who is still at home.
Gideon E. Handel, who obtained the age of 52 years, six months and 10 days, was preceded in death by his daughter, Sylvia, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Handel Jr., and three brothers, Theodore and William of Menno, S.D., and Eugene of Shafter, California.
Survivors include his wife, three children, two brothers, Richard and Aduel of Menno, S.D., and six sisters, Hulda, Mrs. Emanuel Bender, and Martha, Mrs. Reinhold Herrboldt, both of Menno, S.D., Annetta, Mrs. Arthur Koerner of Dolton, S.D., Leona, Mrs. Reuben Koerner and Eleanora, Mrs. Allenton Aman, all of Freeman, S.D., and Ida, Mrs. Albert Mettler of Britton, S.D.
In addition to the immediate survivors, Mr. Handel's passing is mourned by a number of in-laws, nieces, nephews, more distant relatives.
