Waona May Lake, "Pee Wee", a long time resident of Arcata, was born in
Lookout, OK, to Clifford and Edith Mae Williams-Cooney on April 14, 1928,
and passed away in Eureka on July 4, 2006. Waona, along with her parents
and sister, Betty, "Happy", moved to California when she was 12 years
old. On December 7, 1943, she married Devere Lake. They were married for
53 years, until his death in January of 1997, and were blessed with two
children, Sherri Lee and Clifford. She worked for many years as a meat
wrapper, at Purity Stores, Safeway and Murphys. During those working
years she made many friends.
Waona, "Nannie", is survived by her daughter, Sherri Lee DeVore and
her devoted son-in-law, Tom. Grandchildren: Kim DeVore and Kelly, Tim
DeVore and Cindy, and Zachery Lake and Kim. Great grandchildren: Chasey,
Shawn, Lindsey, Nicole, David, Brittney, Tim Jr, Jeremiah, Sherri Lee
and Alexandra. Her niece and nephew, Connie Kight and Robbie Dare and
their families. Cousins: Marlene Parton, Imogene Rumsey, Annette Young
and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Devere; son, Clifford; her
parents, Edith Freeman and Clifford Cooney; and sister, Betty Dare and
her brother-in-law, Dan Dare.
Mom, you were my best friend and was always there for me. Tom and I will
miss you so very deeply and you will always hold a very special place
in our hearts. We love you Mom.
Nannie, you were the greatest and most loving and giving Nannie in the
world. Your were always there for us and all of our many friends. We all
know that you are now in a better place and no longer in pain. You will
always have a very special place in our hearts. We love you Nannie.
A very special "Thank-You" to Pacific Healthcare for all the wonderful
care, love and compassion you gave to our mother and nannie. Also, a
very special "Thank-You" to the nurses and staff at St. Joseph Hospital
for the loving care and kindness you gave mother and her family.
At Waona's request, no formal services will be held, but private family
burial will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2006, at 2:00 P.M. at Greenwood
Cemetery in Arcata. Following the burial, family and friends are invited
to a Celebration of her Life at her home in Arcata from 3:30 to 5:00 P.M.
Arrangements are under the direction of Paul's Chapel, Arcata.
