Ira Raphel Zent
Ira Raphel Zent, 79, Tombell, Texas, formally from north of Lemmon, South Dakota, died after a long illness on January 1, 2005. Funeral Services were held on January 7, 2005 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, Rev. Cyprian Meyer officiated. Burial was in St. Vincent's Cemetery, Mott, North Dakota.
Ira was born March 13, 1925 in rural Bentley, North Dakota, to Raphel and Mary (Renner) Zent. He was raised and educated near Bentley, North Dakota.
He served in World War II as a fighter pilot in the US Navy from 1945 until 1947. While stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas he met and married Josephina Andrade? in Mexico. After their marriage they farmed and ranched north of Lemmon, South Dakota and raised two daughters, Susan and Gail. He had a passion for horses and an avid horse racer. In the mid 70's he decided to leave farming and ranching to pursue a career in horse racing; mostly in the southern states. Later he was employed in the equestrian department of the Houston Police Department for 12 years. He then retired and made his home in Tomball, Texas and continued to dabbled in horse racing.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Pollak, Mandan, and Gail McMullen, Minnetonka, Minnesota; four brothers, Raymond, Mott, Curtis, Phoenix, Arizona, Arnold, Rochester, Minnesota, Werner, Clarks Grove, Minnesota; seven sisters, Irene Jochim, Cambria, California, Elsie Kuhn, Alamogordo, New Mexico, Laura Woeste, Glen Ullin, Lillian Knevel, Lafayette, Indiana, Delores Chambers, Denver, Colorado, Eleanor Fortuna, Indianapolis, Indiana, Marie Dempsey, Dyer, Indiana; five grandchildren, James Zent, Jennifer Bitz, Jessica Pollak, Steve McMullen, Alicia McMullen; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and very special friends Mike and Leslie Wills, Houston, Texas.
Ira was preceded in death by his parents, Raphel and Mary Zent, former wife, Josephina, two brothers, Jerry and Clarence, and infant siblings, Kenneth and Eunice.
