Evelyn R. Bender Phelps, 78, Mandan, died June 21, 2014, at Sanford Continuing Care Center, Mandan, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with Monsignor Gene Lindemann officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Evelyn was born Aug. 6, 1935, into a family of 12 brothers and sisters south of St. Anthony, to George and Emma (Stein) Bender. She attended school in St. Anthony, graduating on May 26, 1950.
After graduating, Evelyn worked as a nanny for six years in Mandan. She moved to Bismarck and began working for St. Alexius Medical Center as a kitchen aide. During that time, she met her future husband, Albert, and moved to Altus, Okla., where they were married and began their family. They moved back to Mandan in 1962, where she started working for the Townhouse Motor Inn, currently the Kelly Inn.
For the next 10 years, she was a homemaker before returning to the workforce. In 1972, she was employed by the State Capitol as an elevator operator. She went up and down for many years, where she enjoyed greeting people, before her retirement in 1996. Evelyn and her family were very musically talented. She loved listening and dancing to music, including country, jazz, rock-n-roll and Elvis!
Blessed to have shared Evelyn’s life are her daughters, Janice Phelps, Bismarck, and Laura (Chuck) Swiftbird, Bismarck; her grandchildren, Nicholas (Mindy) Phelps, Bismarck, Casey Phelps, Bismarck, and Jackie Swiftbird, Bismarck; her step-grandchildren, Isereal Swiftbird, Bismarck, and Isaac Swiftbird, Whispering Pines, N.C.; her sister, Delores Scott, Miles City, Mont.; her brothers, Clarence (Millie) Bender, Billings, Mont., and Kenneth (Wynetta) Bender, Billings, Mont.; her sister, Nettie (Dennis) Braun, Mandan; her daughter-in-law, Juanita Phelps, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and her sisters-in-law, Cecilia Bender, Isabel Bender, Vangie Bender and Margie Bender.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her daughter, Victoria Ann Phelps; her son, Michael DuWayne Phelps; one grandson, Tobias Michael Phelps; her daughter-in-law, Beverly Marie Christianson Phelps; her parents, George and Emma Bender; her brothers, Leonard (Annie) Bender, Leo Bender, Urban Bender, Vernon Bender and Gary Bender; and her sisters, Paulette Bender, Irene (Eugene) Schantz, Stella (Otto) Eisenbarth and Phyllis (Marvin) Burkes.
