Funeral Mass for Eugene Schantz, 81, Glen Ullin, will be 10:30 a.m. CST Saturday, Dec. 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin with Rev. Arul Joseph celebrating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Glen Ullin. Military rites will be presented by Lawrence Higbee Post 239 of Glen Ullin.
Visitation for Eugene will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. CST today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin with a rosary and vigil service taking place at 5 p.m.
Eugene passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Medcenter One, Bismarck.
Eugene Schantz was born Dec. 26, 1928 in Glen Ullin to George J. and Tecla (Anton) Schantz. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Glen Ullin and attended the local country school. While growing up he helped out on the farm.
In 1951, he entered the United States Army where he served during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Glen Ullin. It was during this time that he met Irene Bender.
The two were married Sept. 28, 1953 in Mandan. The couple made their home on a farm north of Lemmon, S.D. In 1960, they returned to the Schantz family farm. They moved to Glen Ullin in 1962 while Eugene continued to farm.
Eugene was a licensed pilot for over 40 years and treasured his J3 Piper Cub plane which he continued to fly until last year. He loved farming, gardening and hunting. Eugene enjoyed taking pictures and making videos. He was a social butterfly and could be found dancing and visiting with family and friends. Irene?s family was very dear to him and he enjoyed spending time with the Bender family.
Eugene was an active member of the American Legion, Glen Ullin Airport Board, Conservative Republic and was a devoted member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Eugene is survived by his four daughters: Debra (Gerald) Sebastian, Hebron; Brenda Maloney, Coloma, Mich.; Pam (Russ) Walter, Keensburg, Colo.; and Donna (Victor) Schantz, Glen Ullin; his six sons: Roger (Sheila), Sheldon, Allen (Collen), Douglas, all of Glen Ullin, Jerry (Brenda) Hebron and Bill, Parker, Colo. He also leaves his 15 grandchildren: Gwen (Louie) Sebastian, Garrett (Melissa) Sebastian, Kristy (Joe) Maloney, Tyrell (Lindsey) Maloney, Nicole Schantz, Brandon (Stephanie) Schantz, Barry Schantz, Kari (Jesse) Billman, Sara Schantz, Dakota, Dusty and Dallas Schantz, Casey and Cody Schantz; five great-grandchildren Caden, Brianna, Samuel, Brinley and Maddox; six brothers, Donald (Polly), Glen Ullin, Ernest (Mary), Hebron, Richard (Lauretta) Glen Ullin, George (Joanne) Glen Ullin, Jerome (Coleen), Spotted Horse, Wyo., Nick (Leann), Glen Ullin; five sisters, Pattsy Glasser, Glen Ullin, Janice (Nick) Mosbrucker, Dickinson, Joanne (Stanley) Heinemeir, Black Creek, Wis., Bonnie (Dale) Nelson, Great Falls, Mont., Carolynn (Jim) Opp, Hebron.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, George and Tecla Schantz; his wife, Irene and one sister Mary Sue.
