Youngest daughter of David Francis Ryan and Catherine Emma Froehlich-Ryan. Beloved wife of Edward Clay Van Houten Jr. and mother to Lorraine, Carol and Jeanette. My mother had a beautiful operatic voice and sang on the radio, as a young girl. She played a base saxophone in her High School band. She was very artistic and quit High School because her art teacher, out of spite, drew a big red X through a beautiful pen and ink drawing she did. The drawing was of a sailing ship, circa 1700, in full sail and was to be a Christmas gift for her mother. My 'little tuffy' mom actually dragged the teacher to the Principal's office, showed the principal the ruined drawing and quit school in her senior year. That's my mom. She hated cruelty and meanness in people or those who purposely hurt others or animals. Three months, to the day, after losing my mom, we lost my dad. I was 29 years old. Today, they have three daughters, 10 grandchildren and and nine great grandchildren. They lived to see six of their grandchildren born. My Father's bar friends called her "Big Bad Joan", for she would give him just enough time for three drinks and then, she'd come storming in and demand he come home. That's my mom!
