Mrs. Anita Peyton Johnson was born in 1929, in Fillmore, California to Sidney and Susie Peyton. She graduated from Fillmore High School in 1947 and Principia Jr. College in 1949. She attended USC for 2 semesters. After school, she married Armel Johnson in 1950. They had 3 children, Clark, Scott and Claudia. The Johnsons lived in El Sobrante, CA and Kent, WA before retiring to Astoria in 1987.
For many years Anita taught sewing and made clothing alterations in her home. Later in the late 1960's thru the 80's Anita owned and operated Custom Gym Wear, a company that made custom athletic gear for high school, college and international gymnasts. Anita was a national class athlete, winning many track medals at the Oregon State Games and at the US Masters Nationals.
She was posthumously inducted into the Principia Athletes hall of fame in 2008. During her college years her women's field hockey team was undefeated and unscored upon the two years that she competed on the team.
After moving to Astoria, Anita was an active volunteer. She worked with special-needs students in Astoria elementary schools. She was active in the Daughters of American Revolution, Alzheimer's and cancer support groups.
Anita lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Bob Ellsberg, of Astoria, and her two grandsons, Steven and Andrew Ellsberg, for several years after her husband's death. Anita is remembered with great fondness and love and is greatly missed.
