Armel Johnson graduated from Grant High School in Portland, Oregon in January of 1940. He graduated from Oregon State College in 1949 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He enlisted in Sept 1942 in the US Army, 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 2nd Division. Served in the European Theater of Operations, through V.E. Day and was honorably discharged with rank of Tech 5. He received many medals including a purple heart. He married Anita Peyton, June 25, 1950. He then joined the ROTC and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, and then called to duty for the Korean War. He served as boat maintenance officer in Fort Warden, Washington during the war. After completing his service with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, he spent the next 25 years as a mechanical engineer, designing and inspecting cranes all around the West Coast.
He and his wife moved to Seattle, where he worked for the Port of Seattle supervising the maintenance of port cranes and the installation of the four largest container cranes on the West Coast. In 1987, he retired from the port and moved with his wife to Astoria, Oregon.
Armel was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, The American Society of Safety Engineers and the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. He loved remodeling his house and working in the yard in his spare time. Most of his retirement years were spent with the struggle of Alzheimer's.
