Matt was born July 3, 1926, to Anton and Ann (Wetsch) in Timmer. Matt went to country school in rural Flasher. He married Mary Morrell on Oct. 22, 1946, in Mandan. The couple lived on the farm for one year, and then moved into Mandan where Matt worked for the Mandan Creamery from 1949-1959. He then worked at Cass Clay Creamery where he held a variety of jobs, retiring in 1988, as retail supervisor. Matt also enjoyed trucking.
He drove truck for his brothers, Joe and Jack Ressler, Arnie Kuhn Trucking and Farmer's Union Transport.
Matt was a member of the Mandan Eagle's Club for over 50 years, serving as President of the Eagle's Club in 1958. Matt was a people person and loved to visit with everybody. He always had time for his children and grandchildren. After his retirement in 1988, he spent even more time with family. Matt was available to do handy man work, pick kids up from school, get groceries and even dog sit. He tackled each job with enthusiasm and let you know that he really wanted to help. Matt took great pride in his yard work and had specific methods of keeping a green lawn. He liked to repair cars and get them running. Matt spent hours taking things apart and would step up to the challenge of putting them back together, though sometimes extra pieces were left over. Recently and even with ill health, he was taking apart an electric screw driver and an electric razor. Matt took pleasure in being a caretaker and provider. He kept a watchful eye over Mary for many years, but when his health no longer allowed him to take care of things, he appreciated that Mary ensured everything was cared for.
Matt's strong, traditional Catholic faith brought him much strength and comfort throughout his life. These amazing qualities will be treasured and greatly missed by his family and friends.
Matt's memory will be remembered by his loving family: his wife, Mary, two daughters, Jeanette (Alex) Fergel, Mandan, and Sandy (Tim) Boehm, Mandan; one son, Kevin (Kim) Ressler, Mandan; nine grandchildren, Mark (Melissa) Fergel, Steve (Denae) Fergel, Scott (Rachel) Fergel, and Mike Fergel, Craig Boehm, Tracy (Randy) Follman, Tonya (David) Markel, Ryan and Lindsey Ressler; 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Margaret Schmidt, Theresa Monzelowsky and Cecelia Bender.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Jack, Joe, Mike, Frank and John; and three sisters, Rose Pauf, Veronica Emineth and Regina Kinsella.
