Ellwood H. Lehr age 81 of Mitchell, formerly of Alpena, SD died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 30, 2011 at United Parish of Alpena Church in Alpena. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:30 PM. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Alpena.
Ellwood Harold Lehr was born on August 20, 1929 to Harold and Gertrude (Orth) Lehr at Alpena, SD. He attended country schools in the Alpena area and graduated in 1947 from Alpena High School. He farmed with his parents until he was inducted into the Marine Corps in December of 1951. He served with the First Marine Air Wing in Korea for 10 months. He was discharged in December of 1953. After which he was employed with Alpena Farm Service.
Ellwood and Lorraine Pfeifer were united in marriage on July 3, 1959 in Wessington Springs. They farmed in the Alpena area and after several years moved to the farm east of Alpena where they remained for forty years. They retired to Mitchell in 2005. Ellwood was a lifelong member of the Congregational Church in Alpena and served in many church offices including offices with the merged United Parish of Alpena. Ellwood also served on the Sanborn County ASCS board and the Alpena Coop Oil Board. He was a member of the Alpena American Legion, VFW, and sold seed corn for many years. Ellwood enjoyed having his children and grandchildren come to visit and to chat with the neighbors.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Lorraine of Mitchell; son David of Kimball, son Keith (Carol) of Mitchell, and daughter Brenda (Robert) Schmit of Artesian; 7 grandchildren: Nathan Wilson and Kara Lehr of Kimball, Taryn and Brenden Lehr of Mitchell, and Allison, Jessica and Katie Schmit of Artesian; sister Fern (Albert) Wenz of Huron; brother-in-law Vern (Jeanette) Pfeifer of Sauk Centre, MN; many nieces and nephews.
Ellwood was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Diane Marie; daughter-in-law Sarah Lehr, his parents Harold and Gertrude Lehr; Sister Maxine Krause; brothers-in-law Dale Kistler and Wilber Krause; and his grandparents.
