Bertha Mettler was born on December 7, 1897 on the family farm north of Lesterville, South Dakota to Jacob and Elizabeth (Mehrer) Auch. She was baptized on December 11, 1897 in Bethany Reformed Church and confirmed on March 31, 1912 at the Lutheran Church in Scotland by the Rev. George Zink. She married Edward Mutchelknaus on November 6, 1929 at Lesterville. They farmed west of Freeman, South Dakota until his death on September 9, 1933. She moved to Menno, South Dakota where she married Henry Mettler on January 31, 1936. They moved to Upham, North Dakota and resided there until his death on August 17, 1956. Bertha moved to Scotland on November 23, 1957. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Ladies? Aid. She became a resident of the Scotland Good Samaritan Center in 1988 where she died on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at the age of 106 years.
She is survived by two step-children: Gideon Mettler of Upham, North Dakota and Annetha (Chester) Serr of Richland, Washington; 16 step-grandchildren; 36 step-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Viola Auch of Scotland; four nieces, one nephew and one step-niece.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; two step-children; her parents; one brother, Allo Auch; three sisters: Johanna Gall, Emma Diedtrich and Olive Auch; one nephew and one step-nephew.
