John grew up in Rochester, in the 9th Ward at 133-136 Lake Avenue, and when he finished his schooling, he worked in his father's grocery store. On 14 November 1883, at the age of 26 1/2 years, he died of consumption. He never married. He was buried on 18 November 1883 in Mount Hope Cemetery, in the family plot, Range 3, S 1/4 of Lot 128.
