Death: Jun. 20, 1910

Joannes "John" Ferner, the son of Jacob Ferner and Eva Marianna (maiden name unknown), was born on 13 April 1829 and christened the next day, 14 April 1829 in Saint Margarethe's Roman Catholic Church in Godramstein, Pfalz, Bayer. John is the only known child of this couple. Godramstein was, at that time, primarily a farming village; today it is part of the larger metropolitan area of Landau. John's mother Eva died sometime before 10 November 1835 when his father, Jacob, married for the second time to Katharina Waldschmidt. This marriage produced two half-brothers for John. Once he reached adulthood, John left for the United States. He traveled from Le Havre, France on the "Marmion" arriving in the Port of New York City on 8 April 1852, just 5 days before his 23rd birthday. In March of 1853, John left New York City and went upstate to the city of Rochester to join a small group of German immigrants who were settled there. In 1855 or 1856 John married one of those immigrants, Elisabeth Mary Fackler and together they had three sons, only one of which reached adulthood. John was a self-made man, as an immigrant he was employed as a chair maker; he eventually owned a grocery store on Lake Avenue in the 9th Ward; he was successful investing in real estate and rental properties and even today there is a red stone building on the southwest corner of Lake Avenue and Glendale Park which bears the name "FERNER" across the top. John died on 20 June 1910 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery on 22 June 1910 in the family plot. He died of dementia; he was 81 years, 2 months and 6 days at the time of his death.
