Marcellus Mark Abel "Max" was the second born son of Marcellus Richard Abel and Clara Elizabeth Tanner Abel. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 29th 1921. He and his older brother, Donald, attended Elementary school at Fairview School and High school at Hughes High School in the Clifton area of Cincinnati which were located near their home on Probasco Court.
One of his first jobs was working for Aluminum Industries which was located near Beekman and Queen City Avenue. The company manufactured cast aluminum items such as aluminum pistons for engines and was converted during WWII to make components for the war including shell casings. He entered the Navy and served during WWII between the years 1942 and 1945. On October 8, 1942 he was married to Ruth Helen Goebel, daughter of Frank Goebel and Mabel Tekulve Goebel. Ruth was born and raised in the Mohawk area of Cincinnati. They were married at St. John the Baptist Church when he was home on leave. After his discharge from the navy he returned to his job at Aluminum Industries for a short time. In 1951 he made a decision to follow in his father's footsteps and became the third generation of his family to join the Cincinnati Police Force. Both his father, Marcellus Richard and his grandfather, Marcellus, were members of the force. His father was the first motorcycle policeman in Cincinnati and his grandfather worked in the police property room because of his attention to detail and his meticulous handwriting.
In October of 1946 Max, Ruth and 13 month old daughter, Barbara, were living in a rented apartment at 2610 Sander Avenue in Corryville along with Ruth's sister Mabel Goebel Anderson and her daughter Darlene. There was a fire in an adjacent apartment which quickly spread to their home. They escaped without injury but the neighbor's 2 year old infant was killed in the fire. The family lost everything in the fire. Following this tragedy, the family moved to an apartment located at 1702 Central Parkway. They remained there thru the birth of their next two children, Marcellus Ronald and Carol Susan. In 1956 they built a new home at 2527 Sarvis Court in the Westwood section of Cincinnati. Marcellus retired from the Cincinnati Police Department in 1978 and went to work for a short time at the EPA building in Clifton and later at WKRC television station before he retired completely.
He and Ruth continued to live at the home on Sarvis Court. Ruth began to have health problems in the mid 1980's. Max cared for her but her health continued to deteriorate. Ruth passed away on September 11, 1994. They had
been married for 52 years, and he had lost his sweetheart.
He made the best of the situation and kept a positive attitude. His favorite saying is "everything is beautiful if you look at it in the right way". Max became ill around Thanksgiving of 2011. He had surgery to remove part of his colon. Complications followed culminated by blockage of the arteries serving his legs. No further treatment was available and he succumbed to sepsis and gangrene on February 28, 2012 at the age of 90 years.
