Mabel C. Tekulve was the second child born to Bernard Johann Tekulve and Anna Elizabeth Hornberger. Mabel is the common link between the Goebel and Tekulve families.
Mabel was believed to have been born in a rented house owned by George and Louisa Hornberger Mosmeier in Penntown, Indiana. Penntown is located about 5 miles north of Sunman, Indiana near the intersection of what is now state highway 101 and US 46. The Mosmeier family had two children Alice and Alvin Mosmeier. They owned and operated a Saloon in Penntown. Alice was a childhood friend of Mabel Tekulve and the often played together prior to the Tekulve Family moving to Cincinnati, Ohio about 1897. The Mosemeier family is buried in the Protestant Church Cemetery in Penntown.
In 1900, after moving to Cincinnati the family was residing at 1512 Elm Street. Mabel,s father was working as a teamster. During their time in Indiana he had worked as a farmer. By 1910 the family was living at 1212 Walnut Street and Mabel's father had changed occupations. He was called a Marble Worker in a marble yard. It is here where family history tells us that Mabel's father went astray. It was during this period that he apparently met several young women. His wife pleaded with him to think of his family however, this was not enough to make him mend his errant ways. Although the exact time frame is unknown, at some time prior to 1920 he left his wife, Anna, and the 6 children that were still living at home and ran off with one of the girls from the marble company. For a long time the family did not even know his whereabouts. A severe rift developed between him and the entire family. His name was not to even be spoken in the house.
By this time Mabel had already left home and was married to Frank Goebel, son of August Goebel and Barbara Nebel. Mabel's mother Anna Hornberger Tekulve was living on Armory Avenue, and unknown to the family, Mabel's father had relocated to Tate Township in Clermont County and was living with a young woman named Anna Thornburg from the marble company. He was again working as a farmer.
Frank and Mabel were living on East Clinton Street in the Mohawk section of Cincinnati. The couple had two children by 1920, Mabel, born August 5, 1915 and Frank Jr. born September 20, 1919. At this time Frank was working as a machinist in a machine shop. He developed a severe drinking problem during these years, often spending a good deal of his paycheck on drinking. He was what the family referred to as a mean drunk. The children knew to stay out of his way when he came home in that condition. Perhaps a combination of his drinking and the dirty conditions of the factories that he worked in had a bad effect on his health. On May 3, 1943 he suffered a massive heart attack and was dead on arrival at Cincinnati General Hospital. He was laid to rest in the unblessed section of St Mary cemetery since he was not Catholic.
Mabel continued to raise the children on her own. She remained at the family home for some time after Frank's death. The home was on Dunlap Street in the Mohawk Section of Cincinnati.
As the children married and moved away she eventually moved to an apartment located on Central Parkway. She remained in this apartment for many years often having family members living with her during difficult times.
In the late 1970's she was going about her normal routine when two men broke into her apartment looking for money or items that they could steal and sell. She was still very fiesty and suprised them, and tried to force them from the apartment. They ended up savagely beating her until she almost died. She had little money and they took a small TV and left her lying on the floor. Apparently a neighbor heard the ruckus and had called the police. When they responded they found her in a critical condition. They rushed her to the hospital where she remained for many weeks. Her injuries were so severe that at her age she was unable to return to living on her own. Her daughter Ruth and her husband Max made arrangements for her to move to the Hillenbrand Nursing Facility. She remained there, mostly bedridden for nearly 10 years. In November of 1987 she became progessively worse and passed away on November 24, 1987. She was laid to rest in section 32 grave 361, not far from the grave of her mother and brother, at St. Mary's Cemetery in St. Bernard, Ohio.
