- [S927] Obituary.
Dorothy M. Moore, age 97, of Mission Viejo, California, passed away on February 11, 2016. She was born in North Madison, Indiana, on September 12, 1918, to Harold and Myrtle (Wingham) Sisson. The eldest of four, she is predeceased by brother, Mark Sisson, and by twin siblings, Robert and Beatrice Sisson. Dorothy’s maternal fourth great-grandfather was Captain Edward Worthington who in 1780 received a signed commission by Thomas Jefferson in Williamsburg, Virginia, to recruit men to fight for the infantry of the Commonwealth of Virginia against the British.
Dorothy grew up in Greensburg, Indiana, and married a high school classmate, John Thomas Coyne, on August 7, 1937. John and Dorothy were the parents of three children: Connie M. Galliher, of Rancho Santa Margarita, California; Thomas A. Coyne of Seattle, Washington and Bloomington, Indiana; and Marian A. Coyne, who passed on November 11, 2004. Following the passing of John Coyne on April 9, 1968, Dorothy continued to live at their farm in Wayne Township near Gosport, Indiana.

In 1979, Dorothy married John W. Moore, Sr., who passed on December 30, 2002. She is survived by a stepson, John W. Moore, Jr., of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a stepdaughter, Sue Ann Pitts of Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, California, and their families.
Although Dorothy moved to California in 2003 to be near family and thereafter sold her Indiana farm, she remained a Hoosier at heart and returned to visit friends and family in Indiana until advanced age prevented her from travel.
Dorothy loved animals, gardening, crocheting, oil painting, euchre, and baking. Her bread pudding, peach pie, and blackberry cobbler brought many smiles of delight, but no smile could outshine hers when she was playing a winning hand of euchre or catching the fragrance of a gardenia blossom.
She is beloved by six grandchildren: Marc Galliher (Patricia), Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Jacquie Mix, Spencer, Indiana; Anita Mattos (Mike), San Clemente, California and Bloomington, Indiana; Dawn Petersen (Dave), Rancho Santa Margarita, California; John Taylor (Lisbet), El Cajon, California; and Karen Coyne, Huntington Beach, California. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Among her surviving nephews and nieces are Norman Charles Sisson of Batesville, Indiana; Dan Sisson of San Jose, California; Nanette Strait of La Marque, Texas, and Marcia Sisson of Greensburg, Indiana.
In childhood, Dorothy was baptized in the Methodist faith. At her first marriage, she converted to Catholicism and for many years attended Mass at St. Jude’s Parish in Spencer. When she remarried, she reverted to her Protestant roots and attended the Gosport United Methodist Church.
Calling hours will be held at the Chandler Funeral Home-Whitaker Chapel in Gosport on Saturday, February 20, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a funeral service being held in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. Interment immediately following at Hudson Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Coyne Family Scholarship Fund, Owen County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 503, Spencer, IN 47460.
