Leo George Hildman, the son of George and Sophia (Wirth) Hildman was born October 4, 1921, at St. Benedict, Iowa. He moved with his parents to the farm three miles north and a half mile east of Wesley. He received his early education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Wesley. He helped his father on the family farm until he entered the United States Army on December 28, 1942.
He served with the 3818th Quartermaster Gas Supply Company in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations in active service. He received his rifle marksman badge on February 25, 1943, and was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Leo was honorably discharged January 8, 1946, and returned to the Wesley. He helped on the family farm until the death of his father in an auto accident on May 28, 1948, where he his mother, Sophia was badly injured. He them helped care for his mother until her death March 20, 1969.
Leo enjoyed playing cards, checkers, reading, working crossword puzzles, listening to polka music, along with teaching his nieces and nephews how to play cards. He also enjoyed bird watching, cooking when he was still at home and going to army reunions and family gatherings.
Leo died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital at the age 88. He had previously been a resident of the Kossuth County Care Facility and the Westview Care Center in Britt.
He is survived by his sister, Mildred Martin of Algona; brother, Irwin Hildman of Wesley; sisters-in-law, Loretta Hildman of Britt and Eleanor Hildman of Algona and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rosella Neuroth, Beatrice Neuroth, Adella Kellner; brothers, Clair Hildman and Aelred "Shorty" Hildman.
