He was the son of Charles Harry Knake and Kathryn Marie (Huber) Knake. Prior to becoming a Real Estate Broker he worked for H. J. Heinz Co. of Pittsburgh. He owned and managed five apartment buildings in Dormont - a suburb of Pittsburgh. He also owned other properties during his life as a realtor. He especially enjoyed selling farm property. His hobbies were landscaping and gardening. He raised nine children with his wife, Elizabeth Theresa (Petgen) Knake, whom he married on June 25, 1936 in Pittsburgh, PA. He died following a massive stroke on September 23, 1989 and is buried at the Queen of Heaven Mausoleum. Walter and Elizabeth had a son, John Harry Knake, born June 15, 1949 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died March 30, 1989 in Naples, Florida. His ashes were spread over the Gulf of Mexico.
