Floyd W. Brookbank, 92
Floyd W. Brookbank, 92, of Ripley, Ohio died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the Ohio Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center near Ripley, Ohio.
He was born May 12, 1918 in Higginsport, Ohio the son of the late Floyd William and Estella (Moore) Brookbank. Floyd graduated from Higginsport High School in 1936, Miami University in 1940 and the University Of Cincinnati College Of Law in 1942. He married Marion Scherer in 1942. They moved to Ripley, Ohio in 1946 and purchased the Collins Coal Company that became the Brookbank Coal Company. The business grew and evolved to become Brookbank Enterprises. Floyd was a United States World War II veteran having served in the Signal Corps in England, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and Germany. He was the recipient of four Bronze Service Stars. Floyd was a member of the Courts Fussnecker American Legion Post #367, a fifty year member of the Ripley Masonic Lodge F&AM #71, past president of the Ripley Kiwanis Club, Past President of the Ohio Coal Conference and served on the board of directors of the American Retail Coal Association. He joined the board of the then Ripley Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1955 and served until 1994 at times as first Vice-President. He was especially proud to be associated with Ripley Federal when the office moved to a new location in 1959 at the intersection of US 52 & 68. Floyd enjoyed rose gardening as a hobby. He was an avid basketball fan and attended UC and Ripley Basketball games, but his greatest joy, were his five grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Marian (Scherer) Brookbank in 1993, one brother - Charles Brookbank and one sister - Patricia Day.
Mr. Brookbank is survived by two children - Barry Brookbank and wife June and Susan Poole and husband David all of Ripley, Ohio; five grandchildren - Jason Brookbank, Matt Brookbank and wife Lisa, Beth Staggs and husband Matt, Bryan Poole and wife Amanda and Megan Seip and husband Zach; eight great grandchildren - Kilee, Cameron, Jonathon, Mason, Jacob, Jordan, Alyssa and Leah; one sister - Katherine Marriott of Felicity, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at the Cahall Funeral Home in Ripley, Ohio. There will be no visitation. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Kentucky 41056.
